“I was arrested for doing my duty, for taking responsibility, for trying to protect life.”
From: Jessica Upton & Anne Taylor, Extinction Rebellion Oxford (XRO)
NEWS RELEASE – 30 November 2020
Extinction Rebellion Oxford, and its groups elsewhere, are opposed to the High Speed 2 Rail project(1). Jessica Upton and Anne Taylor, Oxford XR campaigners are in Court shortly for their campaigning efforts against this monstrous project.
Jessica Upton says:
“This Friday I am in St Albans magistrates court. I am charged with preventing HS2 from working. Last week HS2 tore down part of a memorial wood in Wendover, leaving bereaved people devastated. This week, in an obvious PR exercise to buy favour, HS2 announced a £75,000 grant for a school for new sport facilities. HS2 are building a railway with £250 a ticket to save 20 minutes from London to Birmingham. Our existing railway (which serves a far greater portion of the population ) deteriorates. HS2 remains a huge environmental and financial cost to us all, plus a huge mental cost to those impacted along the route(2). I remain committed to stopping it.”
Anne Taylor says:
“On Friday October 9th my right arm was locked inside a tube which was hooked through the base of an extraordinary, very tall bamboo structure at Gate A, one of the entrances to HS2 works at Denham Country Park.
“HS2 is a national scandal. Our Government declared a climate and ecological emergency in May 2019 and on 30th September this year, the Prime Minister told us, “Extinction is forever”. Our Government pledged to the UN Summit for Biodiversity (September 2020) that we would act immediately. And they are right – we need to do all we can to protect our natural environment. It’s a matter of urgency. We need to do it now by stopping the HS2 project(3).”

- Anne adds: I was arrested for doing my duty, for taking responsibility, for trying to protect life, for trying to ensure a future for our children and grandchildren. As Sir David Attenborough said “We cannot be radical enough when dealing with climate change”. HS2 construction has to stop. Now. In the interests of everyone.”
