A leading Oxon Planning campaign makes this appeal – 6 Feb 2020
Subject: Please lobby your County Councillor re South Oxon LP
Oxfordshire County Council will next week decide whether it would in principle accept a commission from the Secretary of State to take over the South Oxfordshire Local Plan.
We (a group of over 50 organizations) believe that this would be an appalling, and to our knowledge unprecedented, disregard of local democracy.
Please ask your County Councillor to vote against the motion at the meeting on Tuesday 11 February.
South Oxfordshire District Councillors should be allowed to act in accordance with the wishes of their electorate, including withdrawal of a Local Plan that was submitted under the previous administration.
We share concerns that the submitted Plan contains excessive housing figures, well above the Government’s own housing calculations, and fails to reflect the demands of a climate emergency.
But at its heart, this issue is one of local democratic mandate.
It might be South Oxfordshire today, but how would other Districts or the County Council feel later in the year if the same bully-boy tactics were applied to the Oxfordshire 2050 Plan and the Secretary of State took over their powers?
If the County Council were to pass this motion, it would give a green light to Government that it can press on unhindered, resulting in a complete undermining of local democracy.

(NB at time of writing the relevant motion is not live but the committee clerk tells me this is just because they are adding on the officer’s report and it will all be there again in a few minutes!)
